In Their Shoes

Not every one of us has the same status, privilege, nor happiness. Jarring as it may sound but we live in a society where, in most places, the rich becomes richer and the poor becomes poorer.

So I just want to ask for a second of your time to read on, and maybe then, I can help you open your eyes to what’s happening around you.

Let’s start with a simple step: I want you to unlace your shoes.

Imagine yourself in the shoes of someone who has badly something to say but is drowned by the voices of unfair judgment and biased decisions.

Imagine yourself in the shoes of someone who has no other choice but to stay quiet and hope someone out there has enough courage and strength to speak up.

Imagine yourself in the shoes of someone walking their way down the street, minding their own business, and someone throws ugly words out the window just because of their skin color.

Yes, your skin color which you have no control about, which makes you beautiful and YOU, is a source of something to nitpick about by others.

Put yourself in the shoes of someone who has to live off of crumbs and leftover food thrown in the trash. Those who have to drink off of murky water and sleep on cardboard boxes and asphalt.

Put yourself in the shoes of people who have to work for hours and hours washing the dishes, serving your food, cleaning your tables, only to be rewarded by screams and humiliations of patrons who are impatient to wait by an extra minute.

Put yourself in the shoes of someone who has nothing to offer yet still strives to wake up every single day while plastering on a smile because they know that they are lucky to even be alive in the first place.

Now, I want you to return back to your own shoes and feel how blessed you are to be wearing those brand new sneakers and the latest branded heels. I want you to feel how fortunate you are to have a soft pillow and mattress to sleep on. I want you to feel how thankful you should be because you have a lot to be thankful for.

Use your voice to make others feel that they are not alone. Use your status to help those who have nothing realize that they deserve so much more. Use your blessings to help build a better tomorrow for everyone.

Raise your voice because I know that you know, unlike all these people, you will be heard.

Do it for them.

Do it for yourself.

Do it for us.

~
