Female leaders are getting more recognition for being game changers in the business world. Today, Sheryl Sandberg, Ginni Rometty and Meg Whitman are a few women leading global businesses effectively – and doing this in male-dominated environments. Being a leader puts you in a position of influence and authority. Here are five things a leader must do to get good results.
#1: Know the business
A good leader should be capable of driving growth. Growth comes by understanding areas of strengths and opportunities so they can be leveraged as well as understanding weak areas so they can be improved. This understanding also involves knowing external factors such as economic changes, market trends that could impact the business. A good understanding of these areas helps a leader make the right decision for the business and achieve results.
#2: Be willing to learn
Change these days is inevitable. We live in a fast-paced world where technology is rapidly evolving so even the most confident leaders are in a constant state of learning and adapting. Some might argue that showing a willingness to learn is counterproductive to showing a leader has authority. This is actually not true. The best leaders are authentic and being open about what she needs to learn more of is not a sign of weakness, in fact it builds more trust from the people in her circle of influence.
#3: Be clear about the business vision
No leader operates in a silo to achieve business targets. There is usually a team or support persons helping to work towards the goal. Clarifying the vision is an effective way to get everyone thinking in the same direction. Less time and investment is wasted when all individuals are working on tasks, projects and objectives in line with the business vision. There is also a more positive work culture as the team understands how their role fits in the bigger picture and can work toward the result.
#4: Invest in your team
As a person in a position of authority, showing interest in the needs and wants of your team is a must to get good results from them. Investing some time listening to their challenges and ideas is a great way to learn more about the business and build loyalty with the team. Most leaders have a high-level view of parts of the business, the people who are closer to the day to day activities that keep the business running usually have a more detailed view of what is working and what isn’t. Making time to listen to them and discuss where and how improvements can be made is essential to getting results.
#5: Take care of your health and well-being
A leader is a flag bearer for the business. When people identify with a brand and what it does, the next thing they tend to identify is it’s leader. It is therefore essential that a leader is in good form to represent the business. Decision making, communication, presentation skills all require a healthy mindset. To maintain a healthy mindset, a leader needs to be very aware of his wellbeing and be disciplined to maintain good habits.
There is not a one size fits all approach to leading with authority and getting results. There are times when a leader must adapt and change to suit the moment. The five areas discussed are things to consider in every moment.
