A Man Once Said

A man once approached me and said, “Close your damn legs and sit like a lady” while I was on the couch, minding my own business and watching TV. That man was my dad.

A man once said that I shouldn’t laugh too loud because that isn’t how girls should laugh and it turns them off. That man was a close friend of mine.

A man once said that I shouldn’t take on this particular task because I’m too soft and weak. That man was my boss.

How must a woman act to be considered as a “lady”? How should girls move about in public? Must a lady always wear ironed clothes, hair in a tightly pulled-up bun with no strays in sight? Should women restrain their emotions when they’re out and about?

But what if I saw something really funny? Should I just hold in my laugh, too? Should a lady always depend on a man to do challenging tasks? Should we just stay at home, learn new recipes, and clean the house?

You know what I think?

I think a woman should tell herself what to do and not what to do—damn what any man says.

I think a lady should sit in any way or form she likes as long as she’s comfortable.

I think a lady should laugh her heart out whenever and wherever because the world deserves to hear that melodic tune.

I think a woman should go to places—both in life and all around the world.

A woman can learn new recipes, clean the house, and do challenging tasks. She can do maths, business, economics, politics, aeronautics, and so much more. She can swim, play basketball, and cheer on her favorite football team. She can drink beer, eat hotdog, and curse like a sailor.

She can do and be everything she wants because she only lives for herself. She is not restricted by any man nor breathes to please them.

She is powerful all by herself in the way she is and the world needs to recognize that.

Damn what any man has to say.
