There comes a time in your life when you decide to gain clarity in your life and become a better person. You wish to make positive changes so you can live a happier and more fulfilling life!
When I had this moment of realization, I felt motivated and excited. But almost immediately followed an uneasy feeling.
I was overwhelmed.
What do I actually need to do to get started?
How can I make my life better?
Where should I begin?
I’m sure many of you may have also struggled with such questions. I just want you to know that you’re not alone!
It’s okay to feel a little overwhelmed with the idea of making such big changes in your life. In a way, it’s actually a good thing. It makes you proactive in finding the right answers and working towards becoming a better person.
Making the decision to create a happier and more fulfilling life is only one part of the equation.
But how do we go about making the right choices and taking the right action?
While I was trying to figure it all out, I discovered the self-coaching model of Brooke Castillo. I can say this tool came into my life at the right time. The self-coaching model introduced me to the idea that our thoughts can change our lives for the better.
The idea is fairly simple. It all starts with your thoughts.
Observe your surroundings. All the modern inventions, from your beloved smartphone, the internet, the coffee machine, all were born from an idea, a thought.
These things didn’t exist before but due to someone’s vision, we now have access to all these amazing tools.
That’s the power of a single thought. It drives you to do great things. It enables you to have a firm belief in yourself and your abilities.
I was able to see significant changes in my life by applying this simple idea.
I’m sharing a few ways through which we can change our thoughts to create different results in our lives, a different reality.
1. Practice self-awareness
More often than not we tend to harbour negative thoughts without even realizing it. It happens mostly due to the deeply rooted limiting beliefs that we have about ourselves and our lives.
These limiting beliefs usually get shaped in our formative years through our experiences, the way we see these experiences, and what we choose to believe as truth.
An example of limiting belief would be, “Success and happiness are limited” or “I’m not good enough to be successful”.
We always tend to look for pieces of evidence to reinforce our beliefs. It’s just the way we are wired.
Such beliefs lead to negative thoughts that lead to self-bashing and consequently inaction. Without taking any action, you won’t see any results and you will reinforce your limiting beliefs.
Self-awareness is the key to breaking this cycle. There are many ways to practice self-awareness.
Start writing down your thoughts regularly. Let out your inner thoughts without any inhibition. The more you do it, the more you will learn about yourself, and the way you respond to the situations you face in life.
Also, observe your thoughts when you start something new. A project, goal or activity that overwhelms you.
Do you hold yourself back? Do you tell yourself you are not good enough?
When you find yourself thinking negatively, detach yourself from the negative thoughts. Do not let those thoughts overpower you or drive your actions. Replace those negative thoughts with positive ones.
“I believe in my abilities”, “I’m prepared and confident, I have no reason to be scared”, “I’ll achieve my goals”.
2. Change the way you deal with the aftermath of a difficult situation
Difficult situations often leave us discouraged! We feel demotivated and find it hard to focus on our goals or feel happy again. However, if you keep dwelling over your negative thoughts and feelings, all you will see is despair.
In such situations, try to focus on the positive aspects and look at the bigger picture. Allow yourself to move on from the situation.
Yes, things might seem unfair, but dwelling on them will do more harm than good. Changing the way you react to difficult situations can make a huge difference in your life.
3. Remember that if you want different results, you have to do things differently
Your life in the current moment, your circumstances are a result of your actions, behaviour, and approach which are driven by your thoughts.
If you want to see significant positive changes in your life, you have to start doing things differently. And this will require you to change your thoughts.
You can’t expect your life to change if you stick to the same thoughts, beliefs and actions in your everyday life!
For example, if you think you’re not good enough, you will act in a way that will prove it true. You will not take any productive action and limit your potential.
When you find yourself saying that you’re not good enough or your life sucks, quickly remind yourself that it’s not true. Tell yourself you’re worthy and your life is fulfilling. The more you do this, the easier it will be to think positively.
Your perspective will change!
As a result, you will take the right action. You will give your best effort because you know you can achieve your goals and change your life for the better.
Moreover, having control over your thoughts allows you to believe in your abilities, which in turn, helps you in building your self-confidence. And, it goes without saying that self-confidence is one of the most attractive qualities a person can develop.
4. Don’t wait to feel grateful and happy for your life
We often tend to think that if we get the things we wanted, only then we will be happy. But it’s the other way around.
You can already feel this way! Happiness isn’t on the other side!
When you start noticing all the good things in your life, you will become happier. You will stay in a positive state of mind. You will start making choices that will help you live your desires!
You have to truly believe that what you want is coming to you, despite not seeing immediate results.
If you believe that your life is fulfilling, you will always try to make the most of what you have which in turn allows you to see the results you want in life.
5. Realize that thoughts can make the difference between growth and stagnation
If you just decide that your life is terrible, then you will end up accepting your reality as it is.
Opportunities for making positive changes abound around you. If you don’t put your mind to it or actively look for them, you will miss those opportunities. You won’t be able to take advantage of them and create the life you want!
If you’re always thinking you’re not smart enough to do something, you’ll prevent yourself from taking action. You will give up before even trying.
In other words, you will be creating your own roadblocks!
Can you imagine getting a promotion in your job while thinking “I’m not good enough?”.
Can you imagine getting fit if you think you are not capable of staying disciplined?
Become your own coach and friend!
The road to success is never really easy…
You will have to go through many difficulties and face obstacles before reaching your goals. In order to stay consistent and strong through it all, you must believe in yourself.
You will see results if you take action and maintain a positive mindset. And in order to do that, you have to change your thoughts. The good news is that you CAN choose your thoughts!
Ultimately you have to decide what’s best for you. You have to use the power of your thoughts in the right direction.
You can do this! By reading this article, you are already on your way!
Pay attention to the way you think, it will change your life!
